Fire investigators blamed arson for a Monday morning blaze that resulted in an estimated $100,000 in damage at the Heritage Village Apartments on Bristol Street just south of the boundary with the city of Orange.

The fire began in an empty carport in the rear of the apartments and spread through the attic to two adjacent apartments, Santa Ana Fire Department spokeswoman Sharon Frank said. The carport was reduced to a charred shell, one apartment suffered serious damage and another moderate damage.

Firefighters contained the blaze within 15 minutes, and it was completely out in 25 minutes, Frank said. No one was injured, and only one person was home in the two apartments affected by the fire.

“Somebody came to the door and said the next place was on fire,” said Kevin Lords, 28. “I started rounding up the cats.”

The five residents in the two apartments were provided a place to stay at the complex and other assistance from the Red Cross.
