A broken rail caused a freight train to derail at the Santa Fe yard near Pacific Highway and Harbor Drive, a spokesman for the railroad company said Monday.
Eight cars of the 48-car train came off the tracks but did not overturn, said Mike Martin, a spokesman for Santa Fe Railway. The derailment occurred about 9:45 p.m. Sunday as the freight was coming into San Diego from Barstow, he said.
No one was injured, and no traffic problems resulted, Martin said. Damage to the broken rail was estimated at $1,000, and damage to the freight was about $1,600, Martin said.
Repair crews expected to have the rail fixed by Monday night.
