International Business Machines Corp. on Tuesday introduced new high-end personal computers that it said were three times as efficient as older machines.

The new PS/2 computers are based on Intel Corp.’s powerful 486 semiconductor chips, which are expected to allow new and expanded uses for desktop computers.

Officials at Armonk, N.Y.-based IBM expect the new products to appeal to a wide range of customers who need more power. They said the machines would bolster the market for multimedia computers, which integrate video with audio and computing functions.
