A 15-year-old hunter from Dunsmuir in Northern California has claimed the California state record for a black bear, 675 pounds.
Robert Jones, bear hunting for the first time, shot the animal once in the head from 35 feet with a .357 magnum handgun as hounds owned by his father, Keith Jones, held the bear at bay near Lake McCloud Oct. 23.
The bear measured 86 inches from the tip of its nose to its tail and had a 72-inch girth. Its age was estimated at 20.
