Former President Jimmy Carter won’t say if he believes the ghostly stories about his old house. But he admits he’s wondered about them.

Carter recently took a nostalgic walk around the grounds of the wooden house he lived in in the 1950s.

Around Plains, it’s been known for decades as a haunted house. Legend has it the ghost of a young woman lives in the attic.

Carter has heard the tales since he was boy.

“I will say I saw a flicker in the upstairs window one time,” Carter said. “It could have been a reflection. I don’t know.”

When the Carters lived there, the future President and his family experienced some other strange things.

“One night Rosalynn and I were in our bedroom when we heard a loud, house-shaking crash, like a piece of furniture had fallen over or something, and we could tell it was coming from that front room,” Carter said.

“But when we went in there to check it out, we found nothing out of place. We never found anything.”

Plains residents tell other such stories.

But Carter noted the power of suggestion is strong.

“When you believe a house is haunted, you’re going to see things no matter what,” he said.
