No television or radio commercials have touted Myra Atkins for state insurance commissioner.

But at least one publication has come out in favor of Atkins as a write-in candidate--20th Century RagTime, a 3-year-old underground newspaper published by dissident employees of 20th Century Insurance.

Atkins is a fictitious mail room lady who writes a satirical column for RagTime.

Angered over the newspaper, executives at the Woodland Hills company have tried unsuccessfully to identify the publishers, going to such lengths as examining videotapes of security cameras, rifling through desks and interviewing area printers.

RagTime’s latest issue pokes fun at the company’s large number of executives named “Rick” or “Bill,” fantasizes about a window-shattering explosion caused by low barometric pressure and high work pressure, and reports that all employees will soon be traded to a Japanese firm for “a golf course, a Van Gogh and a fleet of ’79 Toyotas.”

Suffice it to say, Myra isn’t expected to draw many write-in votes from management.

Mike Kerrigan suggests that Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-Long Beach), who has been critical of government-funded art work, ought to scrutinize his own campaign mail. Kerrigan enclosed a letter in which Rohrabacher proudly refers to his congressional office in “ Torrence .” Worse, there’s a second piece “authorized and paid for by the Committee to Re-Elect Congressman Dana Rehrabacher . . . .”

Arlene Wilks sent along a photo of the California Bear Flag, which she noticed was hanging upside down in front of the downtown County Courthouse the other day. The picture’s a bit blurred, though. Besides, we’re afraid that if we published it some people might interpret the upside-down flag as a commentary of ours on the gubernatorial campaign.
