MOORPARK : Council OKs Plans for 497-Acre Project

The Moorpark City Council has approved plans for a large residential and commercial development to be built on a 497-acre site in the southeast section of the city known as Moorpark Highlands.

During a special meeting late Tuesday night, the council unanimously approved plans for the project, which calls for 405 single-family houses and 84 acres of commercial and industrial development. The project site is located east of Spring Road, between Los Angeles Avenue and Tierra Rejada Road.

Last week, Mayor Bernardo Perez and Councilmen Clint Harper and Scott Montgomery voted to reject a plan that called for 552 residences to be included in the development. They said they were concerned about the size of the development and the amount of grading that would be required.

But after five hours of discussion Tuesday, the three officials joined council members Paul Lawrason and Eloise Brown in approving a scaled-down version of the project, which has been in the planning stages for nearly three years and will be built by Carlsberg Financial Corp.

“It represents the best work that the five of us can do,” Montgomery said of the compromise.
