Growth Policies
How ironic that Harry Mathis, the most recent person to jump from the sinking ship that Propositions D and M have become, suddenly sings the merits of letting legislators decide growth management issues.
Perhaps he realizes that, if he, a defeated San Diego City Council candidate and University City planning committee member, can be fooled by a title, so can a lot of voters. What he doesn’t seem to realize is that the City Council has begun to address the growth issue, in part, because of the efforts of PLAN!
Mayor Maureen O’Connor and two council members have specifically endorsed PLAN’s recommended growth management policies, and seven of the nine council members have accepted them in concept.
I’m glad that Mathis has finally recognized Propositions D and M, the “Traffic Control and Comprehensive Growth Management” initiatives, for what they are--attempts by a small group of developers to tie the hands of our elected officials.
By changing his mind, Mathis has joined scores of elected officials, the Sierra Club, PLAN!, the Chamber of Commerce and the mayor in opposing these initiatives.
