Louisville’s Anthony Cummings, who had four touchdown receptions entering the game, caught a school-record five in a 41-16 victory over Cincinnati. He broke Mark Clayton’s three-touchdown record set in 1982. The NCAA Division I record for one game is six touchdown catches by San Diego State’s Tim Delaney against New Mexico in 1969.

Will Furrer tied a Virginia Tech record of 16 touchdown passes in a season with two passes for scores in the Hokies’ 20-16 victory over North Carolina State. Don Strock had 16 touchdown passes in 1972.

Scott Oliaro had a school-record 395 all-purpose yards and scored four touchdowns in Cornell’s 41-31 victory over Yale. He also broke the Ivy League’s single-game rushing record with 288 yards in 35 carries. That broke the mark 281 yards set by Cornell’s Ed Marinaro in 1969.

Army senior Mike Mayweather had the 20th 100-yard game of his career and seventh this season. His 132 yards pushed him over the 1,000-yard mark for the third time. He needs seven yards to reach 4,000.

In a 54-10 victory over Arizona, Beno Bryant scored on a 70-yard punt return, his third of the season to tie a Washington and Pacific 10 record. He also scored on a 73-yard run in the fourth quarter.

Darren Lewis, who rushed for 207 yards, and Bucky Richardson, with 180, set the Texas A&M; record for rushing by two players in a game with 387 yards. Lewis’ five games with at least 200 yards rushing are a Southwest Conference record.

Auburn’s 48-7 loss to Florida was the Tigers’ worst in 40 years.

STREAKS

Greg Lewis ran for 103 yards in Washington’s 54-10 victory over Arizona, the ninth game in a row this season he has run for at least 100 yards.

Mississippi State, defeated by Alabama, 22-0, has lost 11 consecutive Southeastern Conference games.

Northwestern’s 48-7 loss to Ohio State assured the Wildcats of their 19th consecutive losing season and was their 12th consecutive road loss. Ohio State has beaten Northwestern 15 games in a row. . . . Purdue’s 38-13 loss to Michigan was the Boilermakers’ sixth defeat in a row.

With a 57-20 victory, Duke ended a four-game losing streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference, and Wake Forest had its losing streak extended to five games.

Oklahoma ended a three-game losing streak with its seventh consecutive victory over Missouri, 55-10.

Miami won its 36th game in a row in the Orange Bowl, 45-0 over Pittsburgh.

Pacific quarterback Troy Kopp completed 19 consecutive passes in a 41-35 victory over Portland State.

WHAT BAD WEATHER?

The temperature was 27 degrees, with a wind-chill factor of zero, and the snow that fell during the game was blown everywhere by winds of up to 25 m.p.h. at Air Force Academy, Colo. But the conditions didn’t seem to bother Brigham Young’s Ty Detmer. The junior quarterback completed 30 of 43 passes for 397 yards and three touchdowns, all to Andy Boyce, in a 54-7 Western Athletic Conference victory over Air Force. Detmer extended his NCAA record of consecutive 300-yard passing games to 20 and tied the record of 22 consecutive 200-plus games set by BYU’s Steve Young in 1983.

South Carolina Coach Sparky Woods, after the Gamecocks lost to Florida State, 41-10: “At times, I think we got out-athleted.”

Notre Dame Coach Lou Holtz, after the Fighting Irish defeated Navy, 52-31, in a game much closer than the score: “We’re in a state of disarray, and I’m at a loss to explain it.”

BIG PLAYS

Chip Hilleary threw a three-yard touchdown pass on fourth down with 1:20 left, then hit Kenny Drayton with the conversion pass to give Kansas a 31-30 victory over Oklahoma State. Kansas had not beaten Oklahoma State since 1972, losing 14 and tying three since then.

Willie McMillian’s four-yard run with 43 seconds to play gave Army a 35-31 victory over Rutgers.

Scott Sisson’s 37-yard field goal with seven seconds left gave No. 16 Georgia Tech a 41-38 victory over No. 1 Virginia.

Jeff Blake’s 74-yard pass play to running back Cedric Van Buren with 2:34 left gave East Carolina a 24-17 victory Memphis State.

Bill Musgrave’s 16-yard touchdown pass to Vince Ferry with 2:01 remaining gave Oregon a 28-24 victory over UCLA. The victory was the first for the Ducks over UCLA at Autzen Stadium (they had lost seven games) and gave them their first unbeaten home season (7-0) since the stadium was built in 1967.

DEFENSE, DEFENSE

Florida State sacked quarterback Bobby Fuller seven times and intercepted two passes in a 41-0 victory over South Carolina.

Dexter Davis returned an interception for a touchdown and set up another score with a punt return in No. 18 Clemson’s 20-3 victory over North Carolina. The Clemson defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown in five home games this year. The Tigers have outscored their opponents, 187-13, at home.

Alabama’s defense did not allow a touchdown for the third consecutive game in the Crimson Tide’s 22-0 victory over Mississippi State.

Lance Gunn and Boone Powell returned interceptions for touchdowns, and the Texas defense held Texas Tech to 41 rushing yards in a 41-22 victory.

Stanford held Washington State’s Drew Bledsoe, ranked No. 1 among Pacific 10 passers, to eight completions in 26 attempts for 64 yards in a 31-13 victory.

Miami shut out Pittsburgh, 45-0, and held quarterback Alex Van Pelt under 100 yards passing for the first time in his 21-game career.

Washington, first in the country against the run, held Arizona to 94 yards in 48 carries in a 54-10 victory.

Colorado State used six sacks, three interceptions, a safety, an end-zone fumble recovery and a blocked field goal to defeat 19th-ranked and previously unbeaten Wyoming, 17-8.
