Tim Mayotte struggled but held on to defeat Magnus Gustafsson of Sweden, 4-6, 7-6, 7-5, today in the first round of the Kremlin Cup.
Mayotte, 30, drew the biggest round of applause from the crowd at the Olympic Indoor Stadium.
Richey Reneberg of Houston beat John Fitzgerald of Australia, 7-5, 6-2, and Alexander Volkov of the Soviet beat fellow Soviet Andrei Medvedev, 6-4, 6-3.
Gilad Bloom of Israel beat Andrei Olkhovsky of the Soviet Union, 7-5, 6-2, and Udo Riglewski of Germany beat Bryan Shelton of Huntsville, Ala., 7-6, 6-7, 6-2.
