PRO FOOTBALL REPORT : WEEKDAY UPDATE : AROUND THE NFL
Two of three men charged in the beating of San Diego Charger nose tackle Joe Phillips pleaded innocent to felony assault charges.
Brett J. Dost and Scott E. Stewart entered pleas before Municipal Court Judge Michael B. Orfield, who ordered the defendants taken into custody.
The judge, citing the “senseless and brutal nature of this crime,” set bail for Dost at $30,000 because of his prior contacts with police officials, and he set bail for Stewart at $20,000.
Dost, 21, and Stewart, 24, are each charged with a felony charge of assault with force likely to produce great bodily injury, one felony charge of battery intended to produce great bodily injury and one misdemeanor count of malicious mischief.
The two men, and a third defendant, David Hanna, 22, are accused of beating Phillips soon after he emerged from a Mission Beach restaurant and bar. Hanna pleaded innocent to assault charges last week and was released from jail after posting $20,000 bail.
