Chiquita Brands International Inc.: The fresh-food company said its third-quarter operating income of $2.3 million was five times higher than last year’s. Net income was only a tenth as much as last year’s $20.3 million, however, because of a onetime gain from the sale of Chiquita’s interest in FII-Fyffes during the 1989 quarter. The Cincinnati-based company’s third-quarter revenue rose 22% to $1.1 billion. Chiquita said favorable pricing trends and strong sales of bananas in Europe boosted earnings.
