American Abducted by Philippine Rebels

MANILA —
Communist rebels fleeing a gun battle with the army kidnaped an American in the northern Philippines, military officials here said Tuesday.
They said the man, whom they identified only as Harvey Brown from California, was taken from a jeepney, or minibus, in Aparri, 250 miles north of Manila, on Oct. 24 during a nationwide transport strike called by leftist unions.
U.S. officials confirmed that an American had been kidnaped but said they did not know why. The Philippine armed forces said Brown is a missionary.
