FULLERTON : Council Members In, Fireworks Out

Share

While voter discontent with incumbents may have influenced some local elections, the majority of Fullerton voters were happy with the status quo.

Councilwoman Molly McClanahan and Mayor A.B. (Buck) Catlin kept their seats on the council, defeating challenger Ray Merryman.

“I’m very pleased with the election,” said McClanahan, 53, who along with Catlin will be starting her third term on the council. “I believe it shows that voters are happy with the direction of the City Council.”

Catlin, 72, could not be reached for comment on Wednesday.

Campaigning on similar issues, McClanahan and Catlin focused on waste management, the city’s finances and traffic congestion. Merryman, in his second bid for a council seat, campaigned for change, saying the council was in desperate need of some “new blood.”

Fullerton voters also decided Tuesday to ban the sale of so-called safe and sane fireworks. Measure Z was approved by about a 3,000-vote margin.

“I’m very happy with the way Measure Z turned out,” said McClanahan, a supporter of the measure. “Considering how much money the fireworks industry put in to defeat the measure, it turned out better than I expected.”
