artist from Vermont won the Interior Department’s annual duck stamp competition Wednesday with an entry showing a pair of king eider ducks.

The work of Nancy Howe of East Dorset, Vt., was selected from drawings by 626 contestants who had entered the contest to determine the design of the 1991-92 stamp. Wildlife artists from around the country annually compete for the right to have their design on the stamp.

The sale of duck stamps has earned $350 million for the Interior Department since 1934, with much of the money going to preserving millions of acres of wetlands and wildlife refuges.

The stamps must be purchased by any hunter of waterfowl who is at least 16. But they are also popular with collectors.
