Bell-bottoms, fondue forks and sounds of 1970

Share

Fondue forks, bell-bottom pants and avant-garde flute music will set the tone for a concert in tribute to the year 1970. That transitional year between ‘60s psychedelia and ‘70s cynicism will be resurrected at 8 p.m. Friday in Mandeville Center’s Erickson Hall at UC San Diego in La Jolla.

Flutist Laura Koenig and violinist Erik Ulman, both graduate students at the university, will perform the avant-garde works of John Cage, Karlheinz Stockhausen and Mauricio Kagel. There also will be a medley of other period music, including Chicago and the Carpenters.

Ten other musicians will perform, including a pianist, a guitarist, a drummer and a trombone player. Lyrics by Jimi Hendrix and Robert Lamm will be read to harp music.

In keeping with the 1970 motif, Koenig says, in the first half of the concert she will wear a flower-power gown; in the second half, an “I Am Woman” outfit. The men likewise will dress in period garb, including platform shoes and bell-bottom pants.

Audience members are encouraged to wear clothing appropriate to 1970 and to bring a fondue fork for the “historically correct” reception after the concert.
