America’s top soldier, Gen. Colin L. Powell, conceded Thursday that while the combat rations being fed U.S. troops in Saudi Arabia are healthy, they are a bore.

The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff said he has sympathy for the men and women subsisting on the “meals ready to eat” field rations in the desert and will try to spice up the menu.

“I understand that there’s a certain boredom that sets in” with regular combat rations, he said.

“We’re trying to do something about that, but the food that our troops are getting is good food, it’s adequate food, it’s going to keep them healthy and it’s going to sustain them well.

“What we’ve got to do is mix up the variety and make it more interesting,” the general said.
