Sue Poindexter, new president of Soroptimist of Manhattan Beach, has announced that her board members for the coming year will be Martha Logan, Irene Guimera, Lila Held, Jerri Highfill, Nancy Mitchell, Judy Schuster, Sally Reinburg, Dale Harbour-Day, Cynthia Pearson, Judy Sterling and Joan Davis. Soroptimists’ community services include training awards for women in need of financial assistance for continuing education, youth citizenship awards to high school seniors and college scholarships. The Manhattan Beach chapter provides service and support to the Wellness Community, South Bay Free Clinic, Children’s Orthopaedic Hospital, Senior Citizens’ Health Fair and 1736 House family shelter, and sponsors a high school service club.

Shirley Borks has been honored as the 1990 Outstanding Trustee of the South Coast BotanicGarden Board of Trustees. Borks is vice president of the board and editor of the Botanic Garden’s newsletter. A third-grade teacher at 7th Street School in San Pedro, Borks has held a number of positions on the Botanic Garden board, has been honored as a Torrance YWCA Woman of the Year, and has received a Community Service Award from the Community Assn. of the Peninsula.

Attorney Lloyd B. Rowe of Carson has been elected new treasurer of the CaliforniaApplicants’ Attorneys Assn. The association is composed primarily of attorneys who specialize in workers’ compensation law on behalf on injured workers.

Westchester attorney Jack Felthouse, a member of the Historical Society of Centinela Valley, recently made his first report as the new legislation chairman for the Conference of California Historical Societies. Felthouse is the first blind member of the Conference Board of Directors. The Historical Society of Centinela Valley has 13 members on the Conference Board of Directors: Walter Haskell, Ann Shea, Christie and Louis Bourdet, Ethel Cooley, Clare Crain, Christina Essex, Anita Peterson, Charles and Maxine Tichenor, and Gladys Waddingham.

The 1990 Honorary Life Membership for outstanding service to the First Presbyterian Church of Inglewood was recently awarded to Dorothy Newhall, wife of the former pastor of the church, Daniel H. Newhall. Over a period of 26 years, Dorothy Newhall donated her talents to the church in music, needlework and other areas. She was a member and soprano soloist in the Chancel Choir, served as the choir’s interim director, directed children’s choirs, created two centennial banners for the sanctuary and served in numerous other ways.

South Bay Union High School District students who are National Merit Scholar semifinalists are Lisa Kurahashi of Redondo Union High School and Steve Golik, Laurel Ulrich and Steve Singiser of Mira Costa High School. These students will have an opportunity, after fulfilling further requirements, to qualify for major college scholarships.

Also ranking high in their PSAT scores, but missing the cutoff to compete for further scholarships and finalist standing, were commended students Judson Blanchard, Tom Ko, Margaret Memmott, Julie Olson, Andy Owens and Luke Williams of Mira Costa High School, and Bryant Troupe of Redondo Union High School.

Semifinalists for the Hispanic Scholar awards, a similar program conducted by the College Board, which administers the PSAT/SAT program, are Catherine Graham and Geoffrey Stover of Redondo Union High School. Graham and Miles Cooper, also from Redondo High, were named as winners of awards from the National Council Teachers of English.

Robert Peretti of Rolling Hills Estates has been named a member of the board of trustees of the California Museum Foundation. The 5,000-member foundation provides support for exhibits and programs at the California Museum of Science and Industry, a state-operated science education center located in Exposition Park. More than 2 million children and adults visit the museum each year.

South Bay residents Maureen Tyson and Jeanne Ruud have been elected to the board of trustees of the Leukemia Society of America’s Greater Los Angeles Chapter. Tyson and Ruud are co-facilitators of the chapter’s Family Support Group. Tyson, a licensed clinical social worker who specializes in working with cancer patients and their families, is in private practice in Torrance. She also leads support groups for the Wellness Community-South Bay Cities, Parents Against Cancer and Cancervive. Ruud, a social worker with a master’s degree in gerontology, is also involved with the Wellness Community-South Bay Cities. Tyson is a cancer survivor and Ruud worked four years with cancer patients in a hospice program in the South Bay area. The South Bay unit of the Leukemia Society meets the second Wednesday of each month from 2:30-4 p.m., at 1602-C S. Catalina Ave., Redondo Beach.

Dr. Julio Michael Torres of Lomita has completed continuing medical education requirements to retain membership in the American Academy of Family Physicians, the national association of family doctors. The requirements call for members to complete a minimum of 150 hours of accredited continuing medical study every three years.

The Palos Verdes Art Center has announced the appointment of Barbara Bowers as public relations director. Her responsibilities include writing and editing the center’s quarterly newsletter and coordinating publicity. She replaces Wendy Katz, who is pursuing a doctorate in art history at UCLA. Bowers of Palos Verdes is affiliated with Vistas for Blind Children, the National Charity League, Girl Scouts, and the PTAs at Silver Spur and Malaga Cove schools. She also participates in the Art at Your Fingertips and Great Works of Art school programs.

Dean H. Cummings has been elected president of Torrance Rotary. He is a past president of the Exchange Club and a member of the Torrance Chamber of Commerce. Last year, Cummings received the statewide Doctor of the Year award presented by the California Chiropractic Assn.
