Youth Program to Focus on Fostering Self-Esteem

“Triumphant Teens in a Tempting World” is the theme of the first annual Overcomers Outreach youth conference today.

Overcomers Outreach, along with New Life Treatment Center, a Christian 12-step ministry program, will hold the event at Eastside Christian Church, 2505 Yorba Linda Blvd., Fullerton, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Steve Arterburn, president of the New Life Treatment Center and author of “How to Drug-Proof Your Kids,” will be the featured speaker. Kevin Carrington will talk about the gift of sexuality and the choices that today’s youth must make.

The event will include music by Rick Altizer and a multimedia presentation entitled “Be Excellent” that will focus on building self-esteem through Christ.

Some young adults will share their testimonies of recovery from addictions and compulsions and how there is hope through Christ-centered 12-step support groups.

Those who attend the conference during the day will get a 2-for-1 discount coupon for the Petra/Josh McDowell concert later that afternoon.

St. Margaret’s Episcopal School in San Juan Capistrano will present “I Never Saw Another Butterfly” as its fall theater production. Directed by Wendy Barrie, a cast of 24 students from third through 12th grade will represent the school in this drama by Celeste Raspanti, based on documentary materials written by children at Terezin Concentration Camp in Czechoslovakia between 1942-1944. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students.

“Accessing Your Highest Self: A Guide to Getting Your Personal Relationships in Order” will be the topic Sunday of psychiatrist David Viscott, author and host of a nationally syndicated radio program.

Viscott will speak at Los Alamitos High School, 3591 E. Cerritos Ave., Los Alamitos, at 7:30 p.m. Advance admission is $20, payable by check to Temple Israel in Long Beach. The Third World Handarts crafts fair and the Heifer Project International will be hosted by the Laguna Presbyterian Church on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall at 415 Forest Ave., Laguna Beach.

The crafts are made by the poor of Bangladesh, Thailand, El Salvador, Chile, Kenya and the United States. Profits go directly to the artisans who made the item.

The Heifer Project International is a nonprofit, ecumenical Christian agency that has sent domestic animals, including more than 3 million chicks and ducks, to small farmers in more than 110 countries and 30 states since 1944. Each recipient passes the first offspring of his animal to another needy family. It is possible to participate in this program by paying for an animal. “Don’t Be a Turkey!” is the title of Rev. Joy Jahn’s Sunday sermon at the Saddleback Church of Religious Science. “Food for Thought” weekly luncheons are being held Tuesdays from noon to 12:45 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Santa Ana, and a special invitation is extended to the Downtown Santa Ana Business Community.
