A 62-year-old El Cajon woman charged with trying to kill her husband by stabbing him with a butcher knife has pleaded guilty to assault with a deadly weapon.

Beulah Stevens faces a maximum sentence of four years in state prison and a $10,000 fine.

She had been charged with committing premeditated attempted murder, which carries a life sentence, but that count was dropped Thursday when she entered her guilty plea to assault.

The victim, 71-year-old Byron Stevens, was stabbed in the lower stomach and back, Deputy Dist. Atty. Cynthia Windsor said.

Stevens’ husband of more than 30 years, now out of the hospital, watched his wife enter her guilty plea.

The incident took place Oct. 24 in the couple’s home on Manor Drive in El Cajon.

San Diego Municipal Judge Michael Orfield set sentencing for Dec. 7.
