TENNIS ROUNDUP : Knee Injury Forces Navratilova to Miss $3-Million Tournament

Martina Navratilova will not play in next week’s $3-million Virginia Slims Championships at New York’s Madison Square Garden because of injured knees.

Navratilova said she will undergo arthroscopic surgery on both knees next Wednesday.

Navratilova has had trouble with both knees for the last three years. The right is worse, with degeneration of the bone and calcium deposits.

Michael Chang defeated Sweden’s Peter Lundgren, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of a $297,000 indoor tournament at London.

The third-seeded Chang will face Christian Bergstrom of Sweden in one of today’s semifinals. Bergstrom defeated Patrick McEnroe, 6-2, 6-4.

Tim Mayotte beat fifth-seeded Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union, 6-3, 6-2, to advance to the semifinals of a $330,000 indoor tournament at Moscow.

Second-seeded Mary Joe Fernandez overcame a blister on her serving hand to defeat Amy Frazier, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of a $350,000 tournament at Worcester, Mass.
