Lowdown on MOMA

Regarding Christopher Knight Oct. 28 article on “High & Low,” the exhibition at New York’s Museum of Modern Art:

When I was there, the exhibit was very well attended, so I don’t know quite what to make of Knight’s comment, “ ‘High & Low’ seems to be talking to no one but itself.” I found it to be talking to quite a crowd and to be asking us loudly to make our way to the museum gift shop.

As a marketing device promoting consumerism, snobbism and pettiness, the exhibit is probably quite successful. The cited remark aside, I found points in Knight’s article to be astute.

I enjoyed the show’s visual aspect because of the juxtapositions of the work presented, but I found the stated premise idiotic and the ethnocentrism and provincialism obvious and pathetic.
