Republican National Committee Chairman Lee Atwater intends to seek reelection to a second term despite ongoing treatment for an inoperable brain tumor, a party spokeswoman said Saturday.

“That is his intention,” said committee spokeswoman Leslie Goodman. “I had always expected that he would run for a second term,” she said.

Goodman said the ailing Republican party chief had confirmed he would seek a second two-year term in conversations with Mary Matalin, RNC chief of staff, and Charles Black, whom Atwater designated party spokesman in January.

Both Matalin and Black were out of the country and could not be reached for comment.

Goodman said Atwater’s doctors “have been encouraged by his recovery and response to treatment” for the tumor that sidelined the 39-year-old political strategist from running the GOP in early March.
