E.M. Forster wrote “Two Cheers for Democracy”--two cheers, but not three. In light of Tuesday’s election, I move the total be lowered to one. One cheer for the electorate, whose turnout was the worst in the West. One for our public officials, the best that money can buy. A single hat skyward for Pete Wilson, charging backwards. Hooray for the bully boys, who bankrolled a slate of confusing counter-propositions. A pinky wave for the voters for whom it was just all too much. Does anyone second the motion? Hello?
