Shane Foley, who played most of the game after replacing Todd Marinovich, threw for two touchdowns and ran for another Saturday as No. 23 USC defeated Oregon State, 56-7, the Trojans’ 19th consecutive victory over the Beavers.

Curtis Conway returned a punt 71 yards for a touchdown and Jason Oliver went 66 yards with an interception for another score for USC (7-2-1, 4-2-1 Pacific-10). Oregon State (1-9, 1-5) scored on a 93-yard kickoff return by Dwayne Owens.

The Trojans led 28-7 at halftime after limiting the Beavers to 27 yards and two first downs.

Foley completed all nine of his passes for 115 yards. He threw his first touchdown pass of the season, hitting Travis Hannah with a 15-yarder in the corner of the end zone with four seconds remaining in the first half.

The Trojans needed only one minute to go 47 yards in five plays for the score after recovering a fumble by Oregon State quarterback Fred Schweer. The drive featured three passes from Foley to Hannah. Foley and Hannah also connected on a 45-yard scoring pass with 10:44 left in the game.

Mazio Royster rushed for 125 yards in 26 carries in less than three quarters. He scored the Trojans’ first touchdown on a one-yard dive with 58 seconds left in the first quarter. Conway’s punt return, the first by a Trojan for a touchdown since 1982, gave USC a 14-0 lead with 11:07 left in the half.

Owens took the ensuing kickoff in the right corner of the field and his 93-yard return cut the lead in half and tied the mark for the fifth longest kickoff return in Oregon State history. Owens had a school-record 237 yards in kickoff returns in the game.

Marinovich, who played sparingly, ran nine yards for the third USC score.

The Trojans scored on Foley’s three-yard run and Oliver’s interception return down the sidelines to boost the margin to 42-7 in the third quarter. Deon Strother’s one-yard run with 2:21 to play completed the scoring.

Schweer started the game for the Beavers even though he was arrested Tuesday on a charge of shoplifting a Penthouse magazine from the Oregon State bookstore. He completed two of 12 passes for 35 yards and was intercepted twice before leaving the game midway through the third quarter.
