I would give Shearer an “I” for ignorance. Schools are using children’s literature to develop science lessons, create math word problems and discover the world in which we live. Children are learning because they actively participate in cooperative projects with each other. Teachers are there to help students learn for themselves.

All these creative things are happening despite class sizes that average in the mid-30s, older facilities without air conditioning in most cases, ever larger numbers of numbers of immigrants who don’t speak English and funding that has not kept pace with inflation or pupil enrollment growth. Shearer would do well to conduct field research.
