Share

Renovation will begin Tuesday at the Friendship Shelter, a refuge for the homeless in Laguna Beach, to launch Homeless Awareness Week in Orange County.

Sponsored by HomeAid Orange County, a nonprofit corporation which assists the homeless, the week’s events will include construction activities, public tours and a formal program at four shelters throughout the county.

The four shelter projects are expected to increase the number of beds for the homeless in Orange County by 15%, Donna Hahn, HomeAid spokeswoman, said.

At Friendship Shelter, a construction crew will start work on structural improvements on Tuesday.

At the Huntington Youth Shelter in Huntington Beach, high school student volunteers will clean the facility on Wednesday before renovations begin.

On Thursday, there will be a tour of the demolished interior of the old YWCA Second Stage Housing shelter in Santa Ana, and the unveiling of plans for a new facility. This event is being co-sponsored by the Homeless Foundation of Orange County.

On Friday, plans for the new facility at Precious Life Shelter in Los Alamitos will be unveiled. HomeAid will assist in construction of an entirely new shelter. Tours of the existing facility, located at the same site, will be available to the public.

HomeAid Orange County is a program of the Building Industry Assn./Orange County Region.
