Most Small Businesses Owned by Men: Men who own small businesses far outnumber women owners, the National Assn. for the Self-Employed said. According to a survey of 20,400 small-business owners conducted by the organization, men owned 72.9% of these businesses. Women accounted for 27.1%. Small-business owners become self-employed at an average age of 28.7 years, with men on average achieving self-employed status at 27.6 years and women at 30 years. A “resounding” portion--85% of the men and 78% of the women--reach self-employment before age 40, the association said.
