Semiconductor Indicator Flat in October: The key indicator of the health of the computer chip industry remained flat in October although orders and sales increased, the Semiconductor Industry Assn. said. The closely watched book-to-bill ratio, which compares semiconductor orders with shipments using a rolling three-month average, remained at 0.95 for the month, the SIA reported. That means that for every $100 of semiconductors shipped to the U.S. market, chip makers received $95 worth of new orders. A ratio of 1.0 or more is considered healthy, but October is typically a low month for the indicator.
