A sheriff’s deputy in Carson shot and fatally wounded a man in a motel room early Monday after the man pointed a gun at the deputy, sheriff’s officials said.

Todd Grayson, 26, of Carson was struck once in the chest about 1 a.m. at the Dare-U-Inn in the 17300 block of South Main Street, said Sgt. Robert Stoneman. Grayson was taken to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, where he died.

Sheriff’s officials said that two deputies, who were not identified, were on foot patrol when they heard loud noises from a motel room. As they walked past the room, three people came out. Grayson stood in the doorway.

When deputies asked if everything was all right, Grayson went into the room, pulled out a handgun and pointed it toward the deputies, Stoneman said. One deputy fired twice.

Stoneman said Grayson had no criminal record and that there did not appear to be anything illegal going on in the room. The deputies told investigators they did not know why Grayson drew his gun.
