Vice President Dan Quayle and Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew of Singapore signed an agreement today under which U.S. armed forces will have increased use of military bases in Singapore.

“The agreement will permit the U.S. Air Force to send aircraft to Singapore several times each year on training deployments of several weeks each,” a U.S. Embassy statement said. More U.S. Navy vessels will also visit.

The statement said the increase will start in three to six months.

The agreement was signed four days after the latest round of talks between U.S. and Philippine official on the future of U.S. military facilities in that island nation. The lease on those bases expires next September.
