COUNTYWIDE : Scouts Collecting Food for Needy

Share

Boy Scouts distributed about 600,000 plastic bags to Orange County households last weekend for a drive that aims to collect about a million cans of food for the needy.

On Saturday, the cans will be picked up and taken to 38 Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints locations throughout the county.

Scouts and other volunteers will then box the food and transport it, with the help of California National Guard members, to the Food Distribution Center in Orange.

This year, the scouts hope to collect about a million cans of soup, stew, vegetables and fruit for feeding the hungry and homeless through the winter. About 14,000 Orange County Boy Scouts are assisting in the drive.

Dan Harney, director of the Food Distribution Center, said the effort is the largest food drive in the county to aid his organization.

Residents interested in contributing food can contact their local Boy Scout office for more information.
