Marriage Pays Off, Survey Says: Single men looking for a raise or promotion may consider this option: Get married. Married men in the U.S. earn an average of 30.6% more than unmarried men, according to a University of Michigan survey. Husbands out earn bachelors in several other countries as well, said Robert Schoeni, a doctoral student at the school’s Population Studies Center. The wage gap held true in age groups ranging from 30 to 50. Schoeni offered three possible explanations: Employers are more likely to hire and promote married men because they consider them more stable and community oriented; women are more likely to marry financially successful men, and married men feel responsible for a wife and family and become more productive.
