In Defense of Ronald Reagan

I accept the challenge of Shirley Wolf’s letter in which she castigates President Reagan for all the problems the nation faces. Is she totally unaware of that other branch of the government, Congress?

Before President Reagan took office, this was a nation with unprecedented inflation, double-digit interest rates and high unemployment. During his Administration inflation reached new lows, interest rates tumbled and unemployment dropped to an acceptable level. Couple this with one of the longest sustained periods without a recession and the Administration of Ronald Reagan looks quite good, indeed.

In the area of foreign affairs we saw the nation develop a policy of military strength and hardheaded diplomacy that finally resulted in the collapse of the communist system and the spread of democracy all over the world. Historians will have the final word and the big picture will emerge.
