Initiatives and Absentee Voting
In response to “Initiatives: The Monster That Threatens California Politics” (editorial, Nov. 12):
Most voters were not irritated with the long ballot. I spent less than two hours reading the voter pamphlet and reviewing summaries in various newspapers. My actual time in the ballot booth was less than five minutes. My only regret is that I get to do this only every two years.
The Times prefers the voters go back to mostly voting between Republicans and Democrats. After October’s budget debacle, it’s obvious that there isn’t much difference between the two.
What is needed is a yearly national initiative system where the people could directly decide major issues such as immigration, taxes and military misadventures.
