NEWPORT BEACH : Council Establishes Drug-Free Zones

Share

The City Council this week voted to support harsher penalties for people caught selling drugs near schools.

The resolution, which establishes drug-free zones within 1,000 feet of all schools and playgrounds in Newport Beach, means that people convicted of drug offenses in those zones can be sentenced to one to five extra years in prison, according to state law.

The state legislation allows the zones to be established around both public and private schools in an effort to deter drug sales to children. The Newport-Mesa Unified School District recently wrote a letter to both the Costa Mesa and Newport Beach city councils asking them to consider establishing the zones.

The council directed city departments to post signs for the new zones, to publicize and reinforce the anti-drug program.
