Bush Leaves Tonight for Journey to ‘Salons of Europe, Saudi Sands’
President Bush leaves tonight on an eight-day trip described by the White House as a historic journey to the “salons of Europe” and the “sands of Saudi Arabia.”
Bush, who has been seeking to rally stronger congressional support for his Persian Gulf actions, will be joined in greeting the troops in Saudi Arabia on Thanksgiving Day by the top four House and Senate leaders--Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.), Senate Majority Leader George J. Mitchell (D-Me.), House Speaker Thomas S. Foley (D-Wash.) and House Minority Leader Robert H. Michel (R-Ill.).
The Persian Gulf crisis was at the top of the President’s agenda as he prepared to depart for Czechoslovakia, the first stop on a journey that will also take him to Germany, France, Saudi Arabia and Egypt.
During a three-day summit in Paris, Bush will join Soviet President Mikhail S. Gorbachev on Monday in signing a historic East-West treaty sharply reducing non-nuclear forces that both NATO and the Warsaw Pact maintain in central and eastern Europe.
Bush and Gorbachev are also to meet privately and are expected to discuss the deterioration of the Soviet economy.
