PRESEASON NIT : Iowa Knocks Off No. 19 Temple

Acie Earl scored with six seconds left give Iowa a 73-71 victory over No. 19 Temple Thursday night at Iowa City.

Iowa plays at Notre Dame Saturday night in the second round of the preseason National Invitation Tournament.

Temple trailed, 46-41, at halftime but took the lead, 69-68, on Donald Hodge’s basket with 2:51 to play. Mark Macon gave Temple a 71-68 lead with 56 seconds left, but the Owls didn’t score again.

Iowa tied the score, 71-71, on Val Barnes’ three-point shot with 43 seconds left. The Hawkeyes stole the ball with 19 seconds left and Kevin Smith fed Earl underneath.

Earl had 18 points for Iowa. Hodge and Vic Carstarphen each had 19 points for Temple.

Notre Dame 56, Fordham 46--The Rams triple-teamed LaPhonso Ellis, holding him to six points, but the Irish guards hit from the outside to win at South Bend, Ind.

Elmer Bennett scored 13 of his 16 points in the second half and freshman guard Carl Cozen added 12 points, all three-point baskets.
