Lloyd’s insurance market was facing its largest equine claim today after the death of Alydar, the popular thoroughbred that was put to death Thursday in Kentucky after breaking his leg and then re-injuring it.

The Lloyd’s List newspaper, which reports casualties for the insurance industry, said Alydar was insured for $50 million.

The stallion, which ran second to Affirmed in all three Triple Crown races in 1978, was buried at Calumet Farm in Lexington, Ky., where he had stood at stud since 1979. His offspring included champions such as Alysheba, Easy Goer, Turkoman and Althea.
