Police Friday arrested a 21-year-old Navy serviceman and his wife in the death of their 2-year-old son.
James Evers, 21, was arrested on suspicion of murder in the Wednesday death of his stepson, National City police said. The mother, Shawn Evers, 22, was arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment.
On Wednesday morning, police responded to a report of a child not breathing in the 800 block of Eta Street and found Shawn Evers giving CPR to the boy. Paramedics arrived and took the child to Paradise Valley Hospital, where he was declared dead, police said.
An autopsy conducted Thursday found that “the juvenile had sustained severe traumatic injury prior to death, which probably contributed to death,” police said.
Police said other children in the household have been placed in the care of other family members.
