Waste May Be Hazardous to Your Wallet
If The Times reported correctly the statements of Fire Department Capt. Jim Schlager (“Potential Explosive Triggers Evacuation,” Oct. 24), and I see no reason to believe it did not, why in the world would anyone report the possibility of a hazardous material on their property?
The next-to-last paragraph of the article states that the McGuire family may face a $15,000 bill for the response to their call. The last paragraph asks the public to call in if they suspect they may also have something hazardous on their property. Both statements are attributed to Capt. Schlager.
How many people having the choice of dumping something they suspect is hazardous in any empty lot on a dark night or facing the possibility of a large bill for its removal would opt to call the Fire Department?
I thought we paid taxes to have the police and fire departments respond to situations that endanger the public.
