Archie Griffin, the only two-time winner of the Heisman Trophy, began his college career by setting an Ohio State rushing record. Saturday, he watched a freshman named Robert Smith wipe his name out of the record book.

“You’ve got a lot more yards coming,” Griffin told Smith after he ran for 170 yards in a 35-10 Big Ten victory over Wisconsin.

“I was prepared for this one,” Smith said. “Archie Griffin represents Ohio State football to a lot of people, and what he did for this program can never be repeated.

“It’s a nice feeling,” Smith added. “But it’s just another landmark.”

The landmark is 1,021 rushing yards, breaking the Ohio State record of 867 yards set in 1972 by Griffin.

Smith also helped the 21st-ranked Buckeyes, 7-2-1 overall and 5-1-1 in the Big Ten, stay in the Rose Bowl hunt.

Wisconsin (1-9, 0-7), tying a school record set in 1968 with its 12th consecutive league loss, trailed by only 14-10 heading into the fourth quarter.

But Smith had scoring runs from the 15 and one in the final quarter, and Jeff Graham capped Ohio State’s three-touchdown fourth quarter by returning a punt 81 yards with 7:10 remaining.

Ohio State, which upset Iowa last week, will play Michigan next week.

“I am glad that one is over,” Buckeye Coach John Cooper said. “There is no way this football team is going to be emotional between Iowa and Michigan.

“The way we were playing early was like a fight. We had them on the ropes but couldn’t put them away.”

Smith’s first touchdown came after Graham’s 27-yard punt return to the Badgers’ 29. Two plays later, Smith ran 15 yards to give Ohio State a 21-10 lead.

“Robert Smith has been sensational,” Cooper said. “For a freshman to gain over 1,000 yards in this league against the tough defenses we play is amazing. Nothing he does surprises me. He made some real good moves today.”
