New Era
The week ending Nov. 10 will probably be recorded as a significant one, marking the beginning of the rise of one great world power, and the beginning of the end of another.
A front-page photograph in The Times shows Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl trading pens in Bonn after signing a 20-year cooperation treaty. This economic union has potential for dominating all other powers in the world. With Germany’s energy and imagination, the willingness of the Soviets to learn and the sheer size of the union, the combination is unbeatable.
Meanwhile, President Bush is condemning our nation to chasing illusions in the desert, and committing untold billions of funds we don’t have in support of his folly.
