One of the two men charged in the only local case in which blacks have been charged with violating the civil rights of whites had his bail cut Tuesday from $10,000 to $5,000.

Richard Maxey, 25, received the reduction in bail from Superior Court Judge Jesus Rodriguez.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Luis Aragon said Maxey’s wife appeared in court with the couple’s small child, and this family support may have had some influence on the judge.

Maxey is charged, along with Donnie Lee Alexander, 19, in a string of attacks Sept. 23 near Belmont Park in Mission Beach. Maxey and Alexander face felony charges of robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, as well as four misdemeanor counts of battery and four misdemeanor charges of civil rights violations.

The pair is scheduled to go on trial Dec. 21.
