Suspect in Kahane Murder Indicted
A state grand jury Tuesday indicted an Egyptian-born man, El Sayyid Nosair, on a second-degree murder charge and eight other criminal counts in connection with the assassination of militant Israeli Rabbi Meir Kahane at a Manhattan hotel.
Meanwhile, police said tests indicate that a revolver recovered in the street near the Marriott East Side Hotel was the weapon used in the Nov. 5 murder.
Joseph Borrelli, the New York City Police Department’s chief of detectives, said experts were unable to lift fingerprints from the weapon.
Nosair, 35, a New York City-employed boiler worker who lives in Cliffside Park, N. J., will be arraigned on the indictment at a later date.
In addition to the murder count, he was charged with second-degree attempted murder, aggravated assault on a police or peace officer, second-degree assault, second-degree criminal possession of a weapon, two counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, first-degree reckless endangerment and first-degree coercion. If convicted on the murder count, Nosair faces 25 years to life in prison.
