A Highland Park man has been convicted of first-degree murder in the shooting death of David Young, a promising San Marino tennis player gunned down July 19, 1989, while riding a motorcycle near the Rose Bowl.

Eric Beauchamp, 22, found guilty Monday by a Pasadena Superior Court jury, will face 25 years to life in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 18, prosecutors said.

Beauchamp, a suspected cocaine dealer, was also convicted of attempted murder in the wounding of Allan Harlan, Young’s passenger on the motorcycle and the apparent target of the attack.

Prosecutors contended that Beauchamp was after Harlan, 22, for stealing a sack of plastic containers from him that were supposed to contain a solution capable of producing counterfeit money.

Young, 21, was not involved in the dispute or the drug trade, authorities said.
