Two people--including a 9-year-old girl--were killed and six others were injured Thursday in a head-on collision on a remote strip of road in the Antelope Valley, authorities said.

Details about the 5:45 p.m. crash on California 138, about six miles east of California 18, were sketchy, but authorities said two cars were involved. One was carrying five passengers; the other three.

Los Angeles County Fire Capt. Ronald Hamilton said a girl who appeared to be in her teens died instantly. He said the girl was a front-seat passenger in a car driven by a woman. Three children, ranging in age from about 4 to 9, were in the back seat, he said.

A girl of about 9 died after she was taken by helicopter to Antelope Valley Hospital Medical Center. A boy who appeared to be about 6 was in critical condition at the same hospital. The 4-year-old, a boy, was taken by ambulance to Palmdale Hospital Medical Center, as was the driver.

Occupants of the second car--a woman and her two sons, aged 16 and 18--suffered moderate injuries and were also taken to Palmdale Hospital Medical Center, Hamilton said.

None of the victims’ names were released Thursday night and neither were their conditions available.
