Experts say the average Thanksgiving meal contains 7,625 calories. So if you consumed your quota of turkey, mashed potatoes, dressing and pumpkin pie last Thursday, you may be tempted to spend this week fasting in order to even things out.

Actually, there’s no need for such drastic measures. Just get off the couch and start working off some of that holiday flab.

The Duarte Fitness Center offers a challenging, hourlong aerobics class at 9 a.m. Mondays through Saturdays, 5:15 and 6:15 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and 4:15, 5:15 and 6:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The cost for non-members is $3 per class. Child care, at $1 per child, is offered Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings and at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday. The center is located at 1600 E. Huntington Drive in Duarte.

If jumping into a leotard and tights is not your thing, stop by the Santa Anita YMCA in Monrovia for a pickup basketball game, 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Tuesdays and Thursdays, or a sweaty session of handball or racquetball. The YMCA is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturdays and 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sundays. Handball/racquetball courts must be reserved one day in advance. Non-members pay $6 to use the courts at 501 S. Mountain Ave., Monrovia.

If you don’t like to get hot and bothered, cool off with some laps in the Sierra Madre Pool. The outdoor heated pool is open for lap swimming from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, 6:30 a.m. to 8:15 a.m. Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturdays and Sundays. It costs $1 for residents, $1.50 for non-residents at 611 E. Sierra Madre Blvd., Sierra Madre.

If the holiday budget crunch is on and you just can’t afford organized recreation, never fear. Take a hike at the Eaton Canyon Nature Center or bike through the Santa Fe Dam Recreational Area in Irwindale.

Just do something. Remember, you’ve still got to face a month full of sugar cookies, mincemeat and the inevitable fruitcake.
