OXNARD : Approval Expected for Armory Shelter
Homeless people will again be allowed to sleep at the Oxnard National Guard Armory on cold or rainy nights this winter if the County Board of Supervisors gives its approval Tuesday.
The armory, 351 South K St., would be open until March 31 on nights when the temperature falls to 40 degrees or below, or when it is below 50 degrees and the chance of rain is greater than 50%.
Gov. George Deukmejian has authorized the use of National Guard armories throughout the state as emergency shelters, and the county has opened the Oxnard armory since 1988.
The temporary shelter will again be managed by the Ventura County Chapter of the American Red Cross if the supervisors approve a contract with the agency on Tuesday.
