ANAHEIM : Cultural Education Plans Outlined

Share

With hopes of enriching Anaheim-area schools with the number of different cultures now flooding the city, the Anaheim Youth Commission has developed a blueprint to encourage cultural learning experiences.

The plan targets both in-class and extracurricular activities that high schools could establish to better familiarize students with ethnic groups.

For students studying foreign languages, the commission recommended more out-of-class interaction with people who already speak the languages involved. For history classes, the commission members called for greater emphasis on cultural diversity and information about how specific cultures helped shape history.

For extracurricular activities, the commission suggested regularly scheduled “ethnic weeks” to celebrate individual cultures with traditional foods, music and customs.

The commission recently sent copies of the recommendations to the presidents of the school boards in the Anaheim Union, Placentia Unified and Orange Unified districts.
